The work comprises ten studies linked materially and visually into one piece. In its sequence of quotidian views, the folded book creates a walk through a winter mess of woods on the edge of Tooting Common. The drawings capture the monochrome textures of knotted, broken branches, the wet and cold of the mud, and the twists of entwined, fallen boughs—layered, blotted, brushed, and scratched like the woods themselves.

In subsequent artists' book versions, printed, folded, and bound in wood, words float behind the images, adding a lyrical voice to the wintery scenes.
