This carving arose from the experience of observing the reflections of my hand in a rock pool. On the surface of the water, my familiar, well-known hand appeared and disintegrated, an ever-changing number of distortions merging it with the tide. The piece depicts my palm at three moments of this flow, overlaid and undulating, carved by hand with marks made intuitively as each moment differentiated itself in the stone. While seemingly abstract, this translation from eye to hand maintains a truth to nature and a desire to communicate—through both visual and tactile means—the experience of what was witnessed.
