Walking in the early morning, the local landscape is sparse. I look at what is permanent and fixed, and what is transient and temporary, and conclude that everything is changing, even in this moment. The dog rose stands with stature and poise among the thistles and industrial buildings, dwarfing the cathedral in the distance. I painted it in oil, tracing the lines loosely, observing the tonal shifts, and building up the complicated patterns of the whole. Working in oil paint and gold leaf with a diptych composition, my painting draws attention to the status and value of the subject and my fleeting encounter with it.
