“Animalcules II” is part of an art installation about protozoa and our inescapably anthropocentric tendency to represent even such tiny animals in the same old way as all the others. “Animalcules II” is a visualization of (or study for) some sculptures, marking the first stage in a process from the mind’s eye to the work made by hand. Not observational, it is utterly unlike the work of the seventeenth-century microbiologist Van Leeuwenhoek, who observed drops of pondwater under the microscope and drew what he saw before etching and printing. However, the composition remains shared centuries later.
