Citrus in Manibus examines the intricate details of the commonplace that are often overlooked. The work is deeply related to the theme “from the eye to the hand,” as it celebrates the beauty and sophistication of the common—in this case, a pair of hands holding a citrus. Often, the intricacies and layered beauties of everyday objects go unnoticed or unappreciated, but in this artwork, these details are brought into focus, and the way they interact with light and shadow is vividly explored. The symbolism of the hands holding a citrus fruit reflects the relationship between man and plant life, suggesting that through ordinary actions, mankind holds the future of its environment—and consequently its own future—in its hands. This also ties into the sub-theme of “art as a response to industrialization,” as it reflects art’s role in addressing environmental and climate issues resulting from industrialization.
