As part of a recent artist residency at Chisenhale Art Place, Heywood created a body of work exploring the boundaries of experimental photography, inspired by the building’s proximity to Hertford Union Canal. She constructed a temporary Camera Obscura in Studio 4 that looked out over the canal and captured direct analogue photographs of the passing scene. The work faced several technical challenges during its creation—ever-changing light levels, moving subject matter, and a fairly rudimentary apparatus. The final artwork celebrates these inconsistencies and the joy of leaping into the unknown at the moment of creation.
