Glacial flour on glass lens
15 x 3 x cm
The pair of images are negative space drawings of glacial sites in Switzerland, made on optician’s lenses with glacial 'flour'—the remains of rock ground down and deposited by retreating glaciers. Light passes through the dusty residue, casting shadows of glaciated landscapes as seen during an artist residency at the Musée d’Art du Valais in 2023—views that are already a thing of the past due to climate change. However, unlike the nineteenth-century romanticism such views might evoke, this work offers a quiet critique, suggesting the need to observe and pay attention to the changing world.
